The Limited IRB Review Type assists institutions with complying with the new common rule regulations. Limited IRB review is required for the new categories of exemption outlined in the Revised Common Rule.
Selecting Limited IRB Review Type
Please note: The IRB Analyst can choose the review type Limited IRB Review only if the policy of the study is set to Post-2018 Rule. You can find this information on either the Study or Submission Details page, and the Post-2018 Rule will apply to studies created on or after January 19th, 2018.
You can edit the policy by clicking next to the listed policy on the Submission Details page.
Once the policy is changed to Post-2018 Rule, you can choose the Review Type:
- Click Assign Review Type/Board beneath Required Tasks on the Submission Details page.
- Click Limited IRB from the Review Type drop-down menu.
- Select a review board from the Review Board drop-down menu. Upon selecting a review board, you'll see a list of the board members beneath Review Board Roster.

Selecting a Primary Reviewer
- When you've chosen a review board, click Proceed beneath Routing on the Submission Details page. Click Confirm.
- Beneath Required Tasks, click Assign Reviewers.
- Select a Primary Reviewer from the drop-down menu. Choose any additional reviewers using the toggle beneath Assign.
