Application Settings control how Human Ethics applications are configured, routed, and reviewed. System Administrators can view and manage these settings by navigating to More > Application Settings from the main menu.
From there, choose from the following categories to configure:
- General
- Notifications & Messages
- Study
- Workflow
Please note: Be sure to Save all changes once updates are made.
General
Control the overall configuration of your application, such as:
- Office Name: Sets the name of the reviewing office or committee displayed throughout the system and in notifications.
- Sent From Notification Email: Sets the sender email address used for system-generated notifications.
- Default Notification Settings: Configure system-wide notification preferences and how users receive alerts.
- Visibility Rules: Control what information different user types can view throughout the review process.
- Preferred date formatting and timezone: Configure your institution’s default date format and timezone settings.
Notification & Message
Customize how and when notifications are sent:
- Set automated reminders for tasks, expiration dates, and administrative check-ins
- Adjust reminder messaging frequency
Please note: This section controls when notifications are sent and reminder frequency. To edit the content of notification emails (recipients, subject lines, and message body), go to More → Messages instead. See Editing Message Templates in Human Ethics for more details.
Study
Define how study details are captured and displayed:
- Study Expiration Limit: Sets how long approvals remain active before renewal is required and reminders are sent.
- Default Study Label Prefix: Defines the prefix used in study numbers (for example, IRB-2026-0001).
- Study Sequence Number Reset: Restarts study numbering at the beginning of each calendar year.
Workflow
Control the steps an application goes through during review:
- Organizational Approvers Required: Configure whether organizational approval is required before board review and set the number of approval levels.
- Approval, Certification, and Recertification Rules: Define when studies require approval, certification, or recertification.
- Role-Based Task Assignment: Assign responsibility for workflow steps based on user roles.
