Overview
Vivarium Operations roles determine which Animal Apps users can access and what actions they can perform within those applications.
Most users require:
- An app access role to open the application.
- A functional role that aligns with their responsibilities.
For example, a user who orders animals typically requires both the Cayuse Animal Procurement Link Viewer role and the Animal Buyer Staff role.
App Access Roles
App access roles grant access to a specific Animal App.

App access roles provide entry to the application but do not necessarily grant permission to perform work within it. Assign the appropriate functional role based on the user's responsibilities.
Functional Roles
Assign functional roles based on the activities the user performs. Many roles are unit-based and must be assigned to the appropriate organizational unit.

| Animal Receiving Technician | Process animal receipt activities. |
| Animal Census Coordinator | Manage animal inventory and census records. |
| Animal Husbandry Staff | Perform husbandry and Veterinary Care activities. |
| Animal Health Technician | Perform animal health-related activities. |
| Animal Care Staff | Perform husbandry and Veterinary Care activities. This role is functionally equivalent to Animal Husbandry Staff and may be used based on institutional naming preferences. |
| Animal Facility Staff Veterinarians | Full access to Veterinary Care workflows. |
| Animal Facility Diagnostic Lab | Perform diagnostic laboratory activities in Veterinary Care. |
| Animal Facility Supervisor | Configure housing and scheduling settings. |
| Animal Facility Unit Manager | Manage scheduling activities. |
| Animal Facility Staff Scheduler | Schedule resources and activities. |
| Animal Facility Business Office Staff | Manage billing and financial administration. |

Animal Oversight, Hazard Safety, and Training Roles
These roles support protocol administration, review, safety, researcher, accounting, and training activities. Assign them only when users perform these functions.

| Animal Oversight and Hazard Safety Researcher Staff Members | Create and submit protocols or assist researchers with protocol administration. |

Assigning Roles in Admin
- Open Admin.
- Select Roles.
- Open the Users view.
- Search for and select the user.
- Select Add Roles.
- Search for and select one or more roles.
- If applicable, select the unit or units where the role should apply.
- Select Include sub-units if access should extend to child units.
- Select Add.
When assigning multiple unit-based roles at once, the selected unit assignment applies to all selected roles. Assign roles separately when different unit scopes are required.
