Cage cards are generated in Animal Procurement or Animal Inventory and contain essential details such as:
- IACUC protocol
- Principal Investigator (PI)
- Species
- other key information
Once a cage card is generated in Cayuse and printed, it must be used only once. The Cayuse Vivarium Operations suite does not support the reuse of cage cards.

-
After a cage card has been assigned to a cage, it should be deactivated when no longer needed. Once deactivated, it cannot be reassigned to a different cage under the same IACUC protocol. Each cage card number retains a record of activation, deactivation, and transfer activities, ensuring proper tracking. As a result, every new cage established under a protocol must receive a unique cage card.
-
Cage cards should not be photocopied or placed on multiple cages.
-
Institutions may provide inactive cage cards in the vivarium for researchers setting up new cages. However, inactive cage cards should not be moved between rooms before activation or mobile census scanning.
-
If a cage is assigned a new inactive cage card, it must remain in place until activation or scanning is complete.
-
If a protocol expires, any printed cage cards associated with it should be returned to vivarium staff for removal from the Cayuse system.
